Laura has a deep passion for and first hand knowledge of Westlake Academy, the Town’s largest asset.
As Mayor, Laura also serves as President of the Board of Trustees of Westlake Academy, the only municipally owned charter school in Texas. During her 8 year tenure as President, Laura has become well-versed in charter schools, as well as the International Baccalaureate program that the Academy implements.
Although Westlake Academy was a wonderful school when Laura was first elected, it has vastly improved under her leadership, specifically,
- Westlake Academy students continue to surpass statewide averages in all four of the state’s performance indices: student achievement, student progress, closing performance gaps and post-secondary readiness.
- Westlake Academy has been nationally ranked since 2011. In 2015, the Washington Post ranked Westlake Academy 42nd among over 2000 high schools.
- Westlake Academy was recently ranked 4th best charter school in Texas and 23rd nationally (out of 2,479 schools) by K12.Niche.com.
- The Academy’s graduates are going to college and matriculating at a rate that far surpasses the national average.
The 54 graduates of our Class of 2015 earned nearly $4 million in scholarships.
More and more families are choosing to call Westlake home because of Westlake Academy.
Laura and Doug are proud parents of a 2014 Westlake Academy graduate and are looking forward to June 2016 when their youngest son will become a Westlake Academy alumnus. It has been the Wheat's privilege to provide significant financial support to Westlake Academy over the past ten years.
Laura's deep knowledge and growing expertise with charter schools and the rigorous International Baccalaureate program position her to continue leading as President of the Westlake Academy Board of Trustees.
